queens gambit declined is an old Cezanne classic card player painting
cross dressed with a Hans Christian Anderson "Emperors New Clothes"
fairy tale, being told to a child sitting on Duchamp's knee. it's about the
men on the board, in the boardroom, about how queens get sacrificed
early in the Kings game. -it's about spectacle, surveillance and conspiracy
theories - lives of chance lived under the watchful eye of media moguls -
the new emperor-. his new clothes looking alot like his old, and the
courage to tell him he has no clothes is a thing of the past, if it ever
existed at all. it flirts dangerously close to illusion, black pawn queens, white king
resigns, spectral cross echoed in the shadow. lost his shirt, looking concerned, smiles
all around. putties turn their back to us and wear lamp shades, having lost their
accompanying role in the annunciation. © 2000
